River Boats on the Creek Stream

$

Just fishing for some help here: what do they look like? I assume the river is navigable as far as Duck Point or so (the Upland Marsh is presumably a bit unsafe anyway). But if I'm wrong I'd appreciate the correction.

How do they get upstream, or does traffic pass by other routes inland, and only passes southward via the river?

Vermin!

I was scratching my head about this.  What counts as vermin in Glorantha, i.e. what fills the role of rats, mice, cockroaches, pantry moths, ants, weevils, moles, gophers, and other assorted pests (yes, I mean apart from Ducks and trollkin)?  I ask this because apart from things like rubble runners there isn't a lot of vermin style species, and while we can assume that there are smaller versions of Gorakiki's immense troll insects, you just don't hear about annoying small furry mammals and pest species of bugs, and other swarmers.  Now admittedly the rules normally devote themselves to critters that can actually inflict reasonable damage, but swarms can.  I am also interested if people think there are stray dogs and cats in Gloranthan urban areas that feed on the vermin and human scraps?

Ernalda's Law

$

0

I'm wondering about how Ernalda's Law operates. I don't think much has been written about it (unless I've missed something, which is certainly possible). Babeester Gor exists to enforce this law and avenge its violations, and from her cult write-up in Sartar Companion we know that kin-slaying, violating oaths sworn to Ernalda, and harming temples and priestesses of the Earth are violations of the law, and it seems that violence against women is also in many cases against this law. It also seems that matters related to marriage are under her law--adultery is a violation of her law in most cases.

It seems that Ernalda's law demands violent vengeance for kinslaying. The relatives of Babeester Gor's victims cannot demand compensation for her killings. That suggests that it's a more primal law than Orlanth's law, which offers compensation as an alternative for vengeance. It also seems that Ernalda's law focuses primarily on blood relationships over affinal relationships like marriage--your relatives are the people descended from your mother and grandmother much more than the family you marry into.

Do we know anything more about this? Is there an Ernaldan equivalent to the Orlanthi lawspeaker, or are priestesses effectively the Ernaldan lawspeakers? Can an Ernaldan priestess issue a ruling about  whether the killing of a woman was justified? Would such a ruling bind a Babeester Gori to not avenge the victim?

Theyalan-centric history.

Well...I'm a native spanish speaker so, sorry if this post contains some mistakes.

I've fallen in love with Glorantha since few months, and, honestly, is the most complex setting wich i've seen until now. The cultures, the epic, epic mythology and the history...Man, the autors did a pretty great job.

If i'm saying this, is because my intention is not attack or make a critic, but rather share a ..."odd" sensation wich i have while reading the guide. I love Glorantha, and maybe this is caused by ignorance, but...Well...

While reading, i have the sensation that the information presented in the guide is very, very Theyalan-centric, or, at least, very Theyalan-Pelorian centric.

Notice please that i'm not saying "Glorantha is Orlanthi-centric" because i know the lot of information, mythos and perspectives guiven in other suplements, but rather signaling a idea that don't leave my head: I don't know much of the God-Learnes besides his monomythic perspective of the world, but, if the history and mythology present in the guide is based in they studies, it seems that the great empire was in love with the Orlanthi mythology, or at least with the esqueleton of that narrative.

I understand that a semi-unified baseline is necesary in the guide, because you can't simply throw contradictory myths to the reader without context, or without traying to consolidate his diferences, but...I don't know...It seems to me that, rather than a monomyth, is the Orlanthi mythology fused with some critical sections of other narratives. Even in the in-time history, sometimes, rather than a cold description of events, when talking about Orlanthi-related things it becomes a epic narrative, wich is good...But odd at the same time.

That, fused with the fact that the center of the Hero-Wars if Dragon Pass, and the events of King of Sartar, almost elevate the Orlanthi to a kind of collective main character, not of an era (wich is normal, even in the real world: countries and empires becomes the center of civilization during they golden ages) but the entire story.

I'm not saying that is necessary give more protagonism to other countries, but if would be cool if in the myths we can see more perspectives of the god-time, wich other cultures have in plenty quantities. With all the information and perspectives until now, is easily grew bored about the Orlanthi, even when they are really, really epic and complex.

Again, sorry if i'm talking with ignorance.

Horses, birds, and cattle

Strange random fact - according to the God Learner taxonomy, horses are classified as birds (as they are descended from Ehilm and Mikyh) and not as herd beasts (descended from Ernalda and Hykim). According to the Blue Book, the three children of Ernalda and Hykim were Lofak (aka Eiritha) the Herd Mother, Fralar the Father of Carnivores, and Permala the Gnawing Goddess.

Interestingly, Dara Happan mythology tends to correspond with this, and horses are considered a completely different type of creature from other herd animals, hence the Pure Horse People taboo on herding non-horses.

What Were Stafford's Main Influences on Glorantha?

Gloranthan mythology is the reason I know about RuneQuest. I remember, years ago, finding the myths and legends of Glorantha on some website and pouring through them for days. By that time I already had an interest in comparative mythology, and the more I learn about it the more impressed I am at what a great job he has done of depicting the way in which deities overlapped, stories contradicted one another, etc. in the ancient world. Perhaps especially the 'dead' sun god raised to the God-Above-God with the chief-of-the-gods being a son of his (ala Baal), this ancient near eastern theme is almost lost to the present world but has echoes even in Christianity. The artificial mythology of Glorantha is more like the real ancient world than Tolkien's syncretistic mythology, and more pre-axial than the Gnostic weirdness of Lovecraft.

What were Stafford's influences in the construction of his different cultures and pantheons?

Wotcher, warblers!

I've been posting these to the Glorantha Google+ page so far, but while that format is brilliant for quickly displaying visual things like these, it isn't that great for keeping stuff collated. As I'm working on a few more at the moment, I thought I'd start a thread here, with all the links 'n' stuff.

Attached at the bottom of this post (at least, I bloody hope so) are the first four in the series. Below is a list of all current entries, with links to high-quality PDFs.

This is serious, guys. It's all grains with these people. Grains, grains, grains.

And cows.

Brassicists.

Who do I sacrifice to my cabbages Whom do I sacrifice to for the sake of my cabbages?

Have we got to do strange elf magic? It's Flamal, isn't it? Weirdo. If I remember correctly, he had a Divine spell that let you turn into a sprout, so it seems appropriate.

Those Red Planet deities

Earlier this month, a side remark in a comment of mine over at the G+ Glorantha-group resulted in a discussion about the nature of Tolat:

https://plus.google.com/+GianniVacca/posts/VvnBKKFcEso?fscid=z13rjt2xqozljby5g04cftuzltqpt3oirls0k.1489396121390843

Like uncounted times before, the discussion quickly veered off, and Peter @metcalph suggested to carry the discussion over to this forum rather than cramping the G+ comments.

Quote

It's about time we learn more about Tolat than the meagre Shargash data we have from Dara Happan sources, which don't begin to describe the deity of the Amazons, the blues of Teshnos, or the war god of the Artmali Lunar Empire. Given the many foes of the later Artmali, I doubt that e.g. the Doraddi see Tolat as anything but an enemy god, and plenty others who were in contact with the Artmali likewise.

Let's examine the sources.

The series of Gods and Goddesses of Glorantha articles in Wyrm's Footnotes remains silent about Umath's struggle with the sky gods and the cause of the tilt other than Umath pushing Ga and Aether apart.

Quote

(Part 7 of the series, Gods of Storm, Introduction - taken from the Wyrm's Footprints compilation:)

It is often useful to arrange tales of the various deities inot the formalise (and often artificial) arrangements favoured by the god Learners of the Second Age. In this we see a gradual but resolute development of the atttributes of the Storm Gods from the wild and utterly untameable force of Umath, who must ultimately be chained into passivity, into the crude but acceptable chieftain Orlanth, whose primary function is as king of the gods of the universe.

The article goes on to tell us how Umath was born, but nothing about his demise or chaining.

Peter @metcalph wrote in the comment's to Gianni's G-thread about Lightbringers in the East:

Quote

The earliest description of Tolat that we have in the Trowjang previous experience in book 3 of the Genertela: Crucible of the Hero Wars boxed set described him as a cross between Humakt and Uleria, which is pretty much far from being a hell god.

Not the most accurate description of the deity, either. Uleria in her role as fertility-bringer and provider of sexual ecstasy, I suppose - uxorial ecstasy is mentioned in the Trowjang or Amazon context, too - and Humakt in his role as a sword- and deathgod.

There are also first published mentions of other related topics in the Genertela box.

Alkoth was presented as one of the three Dara Happan metropolises in Genertela:Crucible of the Hero Wars, and mentions Alkor as the city god (keeping company with Raiba and Yuthu, IIRC). We also get the Thunder Delta as the location where Umath was dismembered.

The Glorantha Book detailing the history of Glorantha was the first time I recall to have read about the Loper People, but since I got access to the unabridged Wyrm's Footnotes only a lot later, I cannot say for sure whether these guys weren't mentioned in some of those sources.

Then there was the star and planets lore in Elder Secrets of Glorantha. That source presented the planet as Tolat and gave the Loper People connection.

The planets presented in that essay had been part of the Gloranthan lore since long before that publication - we get the Twin Stars as a Lunar spirit in the Dragon Pass board game. (Nomad Gods offered a few more stars, but the Bronze Treasure among the Lunar spirits in the French edition of Nomad Gods was a later addition, IIRC. The Red Planet as a Lunar spirit doesn't fit Shargash at all, but it works for the brother of the Blue Moon of the Veldang.) Other early texts about western heroes mention other planets like Artia the Bat, but those aren't accessible to the public.

Just to get this thread running, I am cutting off here.

These designs are illustrative but not definitive examples. Differences in size, weight and detailed design vary according to the requirements of the customer and the skills and patterns of individual smiths. The style of hilt also varies enormously, and many of the styles shown might appear in conjunction with other blades.

A: Pelorian sickle-swords. The examples shown vary from those almost indistinguishable from agricultural implements (though of much finer quality) through to Moonswords, khopesh and the form often described as a scimitar.

B: Examples of Kopis swords.

C: Examples of Doblian two-handed Rhomphaia.

D: Orlanthi leaf-shaped broadswords

E: Orlanthi long-leaf swords, also common in Esrolia.

F: Western broadswords.

The shorter swords are often carried as secondary weapons by Humakti and hoplites.

1652 Great Flood

Carrying over from the Belintar thread and some posts I've made over on G+ regarding the future of the Wastelands:

https://plus.google.com/113966393032570282645/posts/7HKJT338B4U

I thought I'd look at the effects of the Great Flood of 1652 using maps and what little information we have from King of Sartar:

2ed page 133

Quote

Because of the floods, there were many years of panic and desperation, Londario forced a peace among the many peoples of the area. When he was king the last of the cities drowned, and for a year the water came up the rivers as far as Kero Fin Mountain.

Other sources date this event to 1652.

The background info's comes from one of Greg's unpublished works, but many have heard him speak about this event and those leading up to it at conventions:

  • Trolls separate a huge chunk of Valind's glacier around 1630
  • It eventually drift down and blocks Magasta's Pool around 1651
  • The sea level rises and a crude map shows flooding in many areas of Genertela including Dragon Pass, Loskalm, Kralorela, Seshnela and Ralios around 1652.

So for Stage One I've got a map of Genertela and crudely blued out anything below the first 1000' contour line. The flood appears to be gradual with the waters rising due to the blockage. Perhaps it took place over one or two seasons. Obviously Heroes may change some of this, but it affects a large area:

5a019f40e0f68_1FirstContour.thumb.png.7e287d6948a9da4a4e77e3bfc52ad2b5.png

Stage Two coming soon as the flood hasn't reached Kero Fin yet...

It bears a remarkable resemblance to our world map, and/or cartography of the Earth from the 15th century. The main deviation is the area around the Spike, Pamaltela closely resembles Africa, and Abzered Asia.
